What breeders don't tell you
- !Flat-faced breeds (Frenchies, Bulldogs) often require C-sections. At $2,000–$3,000 each, that's a big hit on a $15,000 litter.
- !One lost litter or emergency vet bill can wipe out a year's profit. Build a $5,000–$10,000 emergency fund before you start.
- !USDA licensing is required if you have more than 4 breeding females and sell at wholesale. State laws vary — check before scaling.
- ✓A strong waitlist before each litter means no unsold puppies at 10 weeks — that's the single biggest lever on profit per litter.
Dog breeding income — common questions
How many litters can a dog have per year?
Most responsible breeders limit females to 2 litters per year, with at least one heat cycle rest between litters. AKC limits registration to 4–5 litters per dam lifetime. Back-to-back breeding (every heat) is hard on the dam and flags as irresponsible to buyers. Large-scale breeders rotate multiple females to maintain higher total output without overbreeding any one dog.
Do you need a license to breed dogs?
Requirements vary by state and scale. Most states require a kennel license if you sell more than a certain number of dogs (typically 3–5/year). USDA licensing (under the Animal Welfare Act) applies if you sell at wholesale or have 4+ breeding females. Business income from breeding is taxable regardless of scale — track expenses carefully for deductions.
How do you find buyers for puppies?
AKC Marketplace is the most credible channel for purebreds. Breed-specific Facebook groups drive a lot of volume. A simple website with photos of the parents and health clearances builds trust. The breeders who get top dollar all have one thing in common: a waitlist. Buyers pay more and wait longer for a breeder they trust than for a cheap puppy from an unknown source.
